A Monthly Look Inside Aravilla Clearwater

Cinco de Mayo!

Hola Mayo! This month, we look forward to celebrating Cinco de Mayo, observed annually on May 5th. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The remembrance of Cinco de Mayo began in the 1860s among Latino communities in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Texas, where attendees honored the victory with toasts and patriotic songs. Join us on Tuesday, May 5th, in the Promenade for refreshments at 2:00 PM as our memory care residents, staff, family and friends celebrate the Mexican American heritage. We encourage attendees to dress festively and wear a sombrero. We look forward to you joining us and making memories with your loved ones. This gathering offers a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and recognize the rich cultural traditions that continue to shape our shared experiences. We hope you will be part of this festive occasion as we honor history, culture, and community. Mother’s Day Celebration!

This month, residents and staff take the opportunity to honor, recognize, and celebrate our mothers’ influence, selfless sacrifices, and unconditional love. Whether you are a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, or a cherished mother figure, you play a vital role in nurturing families and shaping future generations. Throughout the years, mothers wear many hats, devoting countless moments of care, strength, and guidance to the well-being of their loved ones. On Sunday, May 10th, we will honor our mothers with a Mother’s Day celebration at 2:00 PM in the Promenade, featuring delicious desserts and refreshing drinks. Continuing the celebration of our ladies, on Tuesday, May 12th, we will host a delightful tea outing at Joseph’s Tea House & Shop. Please sign up with the Activities Department to attend. We look forward to celebrating the mothers and women who have so greatly enriched our lives. We wish you a blessed Mother’s Day!

Memorial Day Cookout!

Harpist performance for senior residentsMemorial Day originated following the Civil War as a way to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. It has since become a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May. This day is dedicated to honoring and mourning the military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. The observance was formalized in 1868 through a Memorial Day Order. In recognition of our nation’s heroes, we invite senior residents, family and friends to join in a spirit of remembrance and community on May 25th from 12:00-2:00pm in the Promenade and courtyard for our Memorial Day Cookout. Please be sure to sign up at the reception desk. Following the cookout, a Memorial Day harp performance by Victoria will begin at 2:00 PM. We look forward to celebrating with you and creating meaningful memories with your loved ones.

Celebration Time!

Resident Spotlight:
“Vera T.”

We are delighted to celebrate Vera T. as a cherished member of our Aravilla family!

Vera was born in London, England. She left school at age 16 equivalent to a 10th-grade education in the United States, to work and contribute to her family’s income. At the time, she had two brothers and four sisters. Vera and her husband immigrated to the United States in the 1970s, settling in Southern California for her husband’s job. She has a son and 2 grandsons and will be a great grandmother in May.

By trade, Vera was a skilled seamstress and worked for several companies, including an aircraft seat manufacturer and boat sail makers. She retired at around 60 years of age. Vera enjoys painting and has created portraits, pet illustrations, and landscapes. She painted a portrait of Lady Diana, which is currently displayed in her home here at Aravilla. One interesting aspect of her life is that, as a young girl, she lived in London during the German bombings of World War II. She was eventually sent to the English countryside as an evacuee, where she spent the remainder of the war and formed many fond memories of that time. She also enjoys her tea and chocolate. Vera has traveled throughout Europe, Spain, and the Caribbean. She has lived in England, California, Michigan, and Florida. We are blessed to have Vera as part of our community and warmly invite everyone to welcome her. Her English accent is sure to make you smile, and her gentle spirit makes her a joy to be around.
